Princeton resident JoAnn Heffernan Heisen has donated $1 million toward the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) announced today.
Princeton, NJ, January 12, 2010 — Princeton, NJ, resident JoAnn Heffernan Heisen has donated $1 million toward the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) announced today.
“As a hospital trustee, JoAnn has contributed thousands of hours over the years to help Princeton HealthCare System provide the very best care to central New Jersey residents,” said Bob Doll, who along with Heisen co-chairs the new hospital’s Design for Healing fundraising campaign. “This generous gift will help guarantee that same care to future generations.”
PHCS Foundation Vice President Joseph Stampe said the donation will, at Heisen’s request, support the Infusion Suite in the new hospital’s Center for Cancer Care, which serves patients undergoing chemotherapy. Stampe said the gift will help PHCS fulfill its vision for creating an infusion suite that offers both expert clinical care and a calm, welcoming environment. The planned features include abundant natural light, comfortable reclining chairs and views of an outdoor oasis of trees and plants to be known as The Healing Garden. In recognition of the gift, the Infusion Suite is to be named in Heisen’s honor.
Heisen said her desire to support an area that offers hope and healing to people with cancer stems from the childhood loss of her father to the disease.
“My personal life was irrevocably altered when my father died from cancer when I was nine years old,” she said. “Today, due to medical advances, his and other cancers are treatable. The beautifully designed Infusion Suite with its view of the Healing Garden will allow those undergoing chemotherapy a level of beauty, comfort and peace during their treatment.”
Heisen said she has been very fortunate in her business career and is delighted to have the opportunity to support the hospital and its patients with her gift. She recently retired from Johnson & Johnson as Corporate Vice President and Chief Global Diversity Officer. Prior to that she served as Chief Information Officer and coordinated the first integration of the firm’s information technology. She was the first woman to be named to Johnson & Johnson’s Executive Committee and has been a champion in the field of women’s advocacy and corporate diversity.
The Design for Healing campaign seeks to raise $115 million in support of the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, which is expected to open in late 2011 as a replacement hospital for the current University Medical Center of Princeton.
With this latest gift, the campaign has raised $91 million in support of the new hospital.
About the New Hospital
Located at the intersection of Route 1 and Scudders Mill Road in Plainsboro, University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP) will consist of approximately 630,000 square feet of interior space, with 237 single patient rooms, state-of-the-art emergency services, operating suites and a comprehensive array of ambulatory services and laboratories. The hospital will occupy 50 acres and serve as the hub of a 160-acre Plainsboro Health Campus that will include, but not be limited to, uses for: medical offices, fitness and wellness, health education, assisted living residential, skilled nursing and rehabilitation, pediatric services and passive recreation in the form of a 32-acre public park along the Millstone River.
