Property and application of tungsten carbide

Introduction

Tungsten carbide powder (WC) is the main raw material for production of tungsten carbide, chemical formula WC. It is also named as Wolfram Carbide, and translated as black hexagonal tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide has metallic luster, and hardness similar to diamond, which is good conductor for electricity and heat. Its melting point is 2870 ?, boiling point 6000 ?, relative density of 15.63 (18 ?). WC does not dissolve in water, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, but soluble in nitric acid – hydrofluoric acid mixture. Pure tungsten carbide is fragile, if mixed with a small amount of titanium, cobalt and other metal, can reduce the brittleness. The tungsten carbide cutting tools for steel, often by adding titanium carbide, tantalum carbide or mixtures thereof, to enhance antiknock capability. Its chemical property is stable.

Property

Tungsten carbide powder was in dark gray, soluble in a variety of carbides, especially in the solubility of titanium carbide and form in great TiC-WC solid solution. Another compound of tungsten and carbon compounds is two-tungsten carbide, chemical formula W2C, melting point 2860 ?, boiling point 6000 ?, relative density of 17.15. Its property, preparation and application are the same as tungsten carbide.

Application

Tungsten carbide powder is mainly used for producing tungsten carbide alloy. In tungsten carbide, carbon atom embedded in the tungsten lattice gap without destroying the original metal lattice to form interstitial solid solution, therefore, it also known as interstitial (or insert) compounds. Tungsten carbide can be got through heating tungsten carbide and carbon mixture in high temperature, and the presence of hydrogen or hydrocarbons can accelerate the reaction. If the oxygen-containing compounds with tungsten preparation, the product must ultimately be carried out in 1500 ? vacuum treatment to remove hydrocarbons. Tungsten carbide is suitable for mechanical processing at high temperatures, and it can be made as cutting tools, furnace structural materials, jet engines, gas turbines, nozzles, armor-piercing bomb cores, etc.

Specifications

The technical conditions for tungsten carbide powder are GB/T4295-93, the general implementation is enterprise internal control standards and technical conditions for part of the business can be seen in Table 6-6-42, Table 6-6-43. Table 6-6-42 tungsten carbide powder quality specifications
