Gales Ferry, CT, November 23, 2011 — A new research report by WeightTraining.com has ranked all fifty states on who has the “fattest Thanksgiving,” using statistics like BMI, calorie intake, and common Thanksgiving dinners for each region. It’s not good news for the South, which the report found to have the most calories consumed on Thanksgiving, as well the largest measure of obesity. In fact, the Southern United States dominates the rankings, with nine out of ten of the “fattest states” being located in the South.

The report gathered information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the USDA, Calorie Control, and FitWatch on four key metrics: calories consumed on Thanksgiving, BMI, food calories, and the typical regional Thanksgiving meal. Each state was ranked on each criteria, then added up to give an overall score.

The rankings speak for themselves: the South dominates the list, with nine out of the top ten “Fattest Thanksgivings” located in Southern states. Colorado is the thinnest state, and Mississippi is the fattest state in the country.

According to CDC studies, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have monitored national obesity trends since 1985, based on what citizens reported about their own height and weight, concluding that the region of the U.S. with the highest obesity rate is the South, with 29.4% of Americans in southern states being reported as obese.” This finding was consistent with WeightTraining.com’s survey: for example, only one state in the top ten was not located in the South.

The survey draws one definitive conclusion: no matter where a given state falls on the list, there’s still room for improvement. Fitness over the Thanksgiving holidays and proper meal planning could easily help many states get out of the top ten.
