Step on to a train to commute these days and the chances are several of your fellow commuters will be hard at work, or hard at play, on their tablets.
The Apple iPad was for some time the ubiquitous tablet for the style conscious, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab offered a decent alternative. Let’s see how the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 squares up to the iPad 2. . .
Both are very stylish looking tablets, at the high end of the market. There are a lot of similarities between the two. One of the most important things tablet owners consider when making a decision about which tablet to buy is thickness – as with smartphones, thinness is king here.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a very slimline device, at just 8.6mm thick with a weight of 565 grams. The iPad 2 is just that tiny little bit thicker, at 8.8mm. It weighs in at 601 grams.
In terms of screen size, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is slightly larger, at 10.1 inches, with a stunning display of 1280 x 800, while the iPad 2 is 9.7 inches and has a resolution of 1024 x 768. This means both have great detail and colours simply pop out of the screen.
Both come with dual-core processors, a 1GHZ Nvidia number in the Samsung and a 1GHz Apple A5 in the iPad. This makes for effortless navigation and means they are both able to keep up with your vigorous demands without much trouble.
Annoyingly, you cannot add any additional memory to your chosen tablet in either case – so pick with care. The iPad 2 is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB sizes, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes in either 32GB or 64GB versions – more than enough for the vast majority of users, but it would still be nice to have the option of adding more.
In terms of camera, both tablets have a front and a back facing camera. The Samsung Galaxy Tab comes with a 3 megapixel autofocus rear facing camera and a 2 megapixel front facing camera, while the iPad 2 has a back facing camera with 5x digital zoom and a VGA quality front facing camera. Here the Samsung Galaxy Tab comes out on top.
You can get your hands on a 32GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Clove Technology for £579.99 including VAT from Clove Technology, and the 64GB version will be available soon, priced at £659.99 including VAT.
