Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and the center of the country’s economy. It enjoys the position of being the gateway for West Africa and is home to one of the most modern airports in the African continent. The city is a highly developed and prosperous settlement. In the ancient times, the area now defined as Lagos was the habitat of aboriginal African tribes. During the European colonization, it became an important region because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The port city enjoyed trade and commerce and began to develop. After the Europeans left Nigeria, the governments of the country laid great emphasis on Lagos’ development because it is the most important port city in the country and its financial capital. Today, along with being a business hub, Lagos is also the entertainment capital of Nigeria. Having grown from a rural tribal settlement into a world class metropolis, Nigeria’s largest city has a culture which has been one of the major reasons for tourism here. In contrast, Abuja is a city which was built purposely not only to serve as Nigeria’s administrative capital but also a settlement where beggars would not be allowed and the cost of living would be so high that only the elites would care to live there. It is thus, not much appreciated and has been termed by tourists as rather faked out and made up. Lagos, on the other hand, has a very genuine environment which is lively, quite African and yet pretty Europeanized and comprises of a sharp contrast of very posh and very poor.
