Jan 30, Kolkata: With Vinay Rai raising the storm of internet censorship crusade in India, there has been a huge controversy that is still raging in the country. Moreover, after Kapil Sibbal, the Communications and IT minister of India gave his nod to this protest and shown his support against obscene content on the social networking sites, things have taken a serious turn.
There have been young guys, with their mouths covered with black cloth, and their hands hold placards that said: “We have no right to freedom of expression”.
Ignoring all the protests, the advocates of this demanded censorship of the content that are posted on a number of sites, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo and Youtube went on to explain, why they wanted a cleanup of those 21 sites.
Vinay Rai said: “Millions use social networking sites across the globe. Of those, how many users are genuine? Thousands create accounts with fake identities each day. Men pose as women, women pose as men. People post objectionable, abusive content every day – who regulates them? Who holds them accountable? No one.”
Rai, Sibbal, and the other ministers of the communications and IT department are of the opinion that the kind of content which are up there without any filtering on those 21 sites, to whom they had sent the summons to, can infuriate the people and give rise to communal, political, and cultural disharmony in the country. India, being a multi-cultural country, where there are people of six different religious faiths, religious unrest can trigger off at any time.
Justice Suresh Kait, criticizing the representatives of Google India and Facebook, said, “Like China, we will block all such websites”. While this has raised great storm against the companies, the MD of the new audio-visual Social Networking Site called SISATEL, Mr Indranil Mukherjee, is in concord with the Indian Government in this regard. Being an Indian himself, Mukherjee understands the graveness of the issue.
Mukherjee said: “India is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-religious country. A land where people of such diversity dwell together, it is important to respect each others’ religion, feelings, culture and much more.” Mukherjee realises that, social networking is the need of the era but there should be more control on the content that is being posted up on the sites.
Sisatel is an audio-visual based social networking site. The technology that Sisatel uses to play video clips does not involve downloading the clip. The clips are played by a process of progressive downloading. Since there is no downloading of the video, tampering is not possible.
Mukherjee also added: “A lot of people post objectionable content on social networking sites, but a strict check should be there to remove or delete these content and the groups or profile who post them permanently. A difficult task, no doubt, but it is not impossible.”
