The conference was held at the beautiful Hyatt Regency on the Hudson in Jersey City on November 11-12, 2011 and was attended by over 250 healthcare and industry providers from across the nation.

The conference, which provided Continuing Medical Education credits by Staten Island University Hospital, began on Friday morning with opening remarks by Dr. Charles Vonfrolio, Chairman of Anesthesiology (SIUH) and Dr. Sudhir Diwan (NYSIPP President). Various sessions followed, with lectures from featured speakers who are leaders in treating patients suffering from pain. These lecture sessions included Evolving Practice Paradigm, Advanced Neuromodulation, Evidence Based Practice of Pain Medicine and Most Important Goal: Patient Safety, where Dr. Diwan lectured on head and neck interventions.

During the breaks between lectures, attendees had the opportunity to visit the exhibition hall where industry partners were providing information on their company and products. Once Friday’s sessions adjourned all attendees were treated to a cocktail reception in the exhibition hall, followed by a dinner reception. During dinner, the NYSIPP Board honored two outstanding physicians; Dr. Timothy Deer, with the NYSIPP Outstanding Pain Physician of the Year 2011 and Dr. Laxmaiah Manchikanti, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Although Dr. Manchikanti was unable to attend the conference due to a prior engagement, Dr. Staats accepted the award on his behalf. The dinner also included a speech by keynote speaker, Dr. Timothy Deer, on the future of interventional pain medicine.

The conference continued on Saturday with an industry sponsored breakfast by Vertos Medical, where Dr. Timothy Deer lectured on the Mild Procedure. Lectures continued throughout the morning with the following sessions:Osteoporosis, Spinal Fractures and Evidence, and Practice Guidelines and Politics where Dr. Chapman lectured on Worker’s Comp Guidelines in NY State. Dr. David Caraway lectured on Changes in Spinal Cord Stimulation Levels – Effect of Position Changes and Biomechanics on Patient Therapy at the Medtronic industry sponsored lunch.

The lecture series concluded at 1:30pm, with the highly anticipated cadaver workshops beginning promptly afterwards. These workshops gave attendees an opportunity to obtain a hands-on approach to learning. The workshop stations included: Epidural Lysis of Adhesions, Simplicity III, Mild Procedure, Spinal Cord Stimulation, Vertebral Augmentation and Ultrasound for Peripheral Nerve Blocks. All those who attended the workshops were able to participate in each station. These elements of the conference were led by distinguished physicians and leaders in the pain medicine industry, including Dr. Diwan and Dr. Chapman.

Overall, the conference was very successful and many attendees voiced that they would be attending next year as well. When asked about the New York Society of Interventional Pain Physicians’ First Annual Conference, Dr. Diwan said, “I am thrilled with the success of the first annual conference and that attendees found it to be informative. Our goal was to bring together some of the best in the pain industry to educate and learn from each other. I believe we were successful in doing so, and we look forward to hosting another conference next year with a possible collaboration with the New Jersey State Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.”
