The Steering and Scientific Committees of the forthcoming ‘International HIV Persistence Workshop’ have just recently announced the preliminary program of this meeting which is dedicated towards finding a cure against HIV and AIDS.
Tucker, GA, April 08, 2011 — Even if most HIV-infected patients treated with highly active anti-retroviral therapy (ART) are quite well today, compliance, toxicity, and cost are major concerns. Furthermore, each time ART is stopped, plasma viremia rebounds because HIV always remains dormant in some reservoirs. This long-term persistence of HIV in an infected body means that ART must be taken life-long. Finally, the HIV pandemic remains very active with more than 33 million infected individuals worldwide et 7,000 daily new cases of HIV infection. Most of these patients reside in poor-resource countries where less than 40% of them have access to ART.
In this context, finding a way to control HIV replication without permanently taking ART is gaining major importance in the scientific community where the term ‘cure’ is no longer banished. This hard task needs to connect basic scientists with clinical scientists, and bring researchers from different fields. These are the principles of the ‘International HIV Persistence Workshop’ since its first edition in 2003. This biennial meeting welcomes more than 150 scientists actively involved in HIV persistence and reservoirs research, allowing them to discuss their findings and shape future projects. Governmental agencies, private foundations and pharmaceutical companies are also part of the process which tackles research from animal models to human gene therapy.
The workshop is organized by those who actively conduct this research such as Doctor Alain Lafeuillade (Toulon, France), Mario Stevenson (Miami, USA), David Margolis (Chapel Hill, USA), Tae-Wook Chun (Bethesda, USA)
