Not all stainless steel is created equally and just because they call it stainless doesn’t mean it won’t become stained, discolored or even rusty

“One of my appliance repair customers bought a new stainless steel grill last summer, and he was under the impression that it would look great for years, without requiring maintenance, because it was “stainless steel,” said Dougherty. “This is a myth. Not all stainless steel is created equal and it can stain, discolor or even rust.”
When asked about cleaning and maintaining stainless steel appliances, Bob advises his customers to use a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner that is specially designed for stainless steel appliances. There are also polishes available, but do not polish the grill. Stainless steel polishes can discolor under intense heat and make the grill look worse.”
Bob recalled a recent appliance repair service call where the customer was outraged that her stainless steel stovetop had rusted. Bob explained how this could happen, “Harsh cleaners containing ammonia, bleach and disinfectants can remove the protective oxide layer, allowing moisture or other corrosives to begin the deterioration process. Scratches or dents that cut below the surface of an appliance may rust if left exposed.”
