Summer does not have to be Speeding Season

Aug 1, 2011 – In many communities summer does mean fun for families and business people. It means danger because speeding, red-light running and other dangerous driving habits increase when more pedestrians are on the streets.

The amount of foot traffic increases in the summer because children are out of school and more people walk in the warm weather. Summer also means an increase in the number of joggers and bicyclists on the street. That can mean an increase in the number of people hit and injured or killed by bad drivers.

Every summer communities struggle to protect the pedestrians, bicyclists, joggers and others from speeders. There simply are not enough officers to catch all the speeders and watch all the places where pedestrians cross or walk on the streets.

Technology has provided a solution in the form of traffic systems. Mounting cameras on all the stop lights in town can enable a community to catch every red light runner. That will certainly increase traffic safety because drivers will know that they will be ticketed if they run a red light.

Put an End to Speeding Season

Portable traffic systems from companies like Optotraffic are now small enough to be mounted on light trailers. That means such units can be towed by squad cars and placed anywhere there is a problem. For example the system can be moved to the corner by the park during the week, the corner by the church on Sunday morning and the downtown shopping area on Saturday.

That means the system can be moved to neighborhoods when residents complain about speeding. It can also be positioned to catch out of town travelers who are trying to avoid the traffic laws and the speed limit by driving on the side streets.

Best of all traffic systems catch every violator. That encourages defensive driving because drivers know they cannot get away with speeding or red lighting running The drivers will slow down and obey the traffic signals which will make the streets safer for everyone.
