Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities Celebrates 40 Years
Public Invited to Open House on August 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 27, 2009)—The Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities (www.tammylynncenter.org) marks a celebratory milestone this year as the Center celebrates 40 years of serving children and adults with special needs. The public is invited to an open house being held on Saturday, August 1, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There will be a ceremony honoring the three founding families beginning at 11:30 a.m. along with a special performance by Voices Together, a performing chorus featuring talented musicians with developmental disabilities.

Founded on July 11, 1969 to overcome the challenge of unmet needs for children with disabilities, the Center began as the Mother’s Morning Out program in the basement of the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, N.C. The program quickly expanded and grew into a full-day services program including a special education school, therapy and respite services, and eventually, a residential program.

Today, the Tammy Lynn Center is unique in North Carolina for its scope of services, helping nearly 400 families each year. “I don’t know of any other program in North Carolina that provides as many different types of services under one umbrella,” says Mary Freeman, president and CEO of the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities.

Forty years after its founding, the Center continues to be a place of growth and care for children and adults with special needs, as well as a place of comfort and understanding for their families. “We’re accomplishing miracles here,” adds Freeman. “There is joy and unparalleled accomplishment, not hopelessness and sadness. Everyone here is remarkable—the staff, the families, and the children and adults we serve.”
