‘Toxic’ Leather Sofas Causing Chemical Burns

Following on from a spate of allegations from irate owners that their new leather sofas were causing them severe skin problems investigations reveal that the issue is alarmingly widespread and that thousands of people may be involved in compensation claims.

Bacup, UK, April 06, 2009 — In what has been cited as possibly the biggest compensation claim in the UK many well known high street retailers have admitted liability to supplying leather sofas which have caused severe irritation and even burns to unsuspecting customers. The BBC reports the retailers involved include Argos and Land Of Leather.

Sam Neumann who owns the leather sofa company English Sofas says: “It appears that the problem has been caused by Chinese manufacturers using anti mould chemicals packed in sachets along with the leather sofas to stop them going mouldy in transit. These sachets if they get very hot can evaporate the toxic chemical into the air which can get absorbed into the leather.”

Many solicitors firms have been advertising the issue and have been inundated with people coming forward to explore compensation. Meanwhile the EU is bringing in an emergency directive in May requiring all retailers to recall affected products from sale. Leather suites and any other products containing the anti mould chemicals will also be banned from entering EU member states.
