Virya Technologies to swim the Channel for charity

V

It all started with the Great British Walking Challenge, incorporating Walk to Work Week in May 2012 which was closely followed with Bike Week in June 2012.  Virya Technologies achieved the highest staff participation rate in Suffolk and won prizes from the Fresh Ways to Work team including a basket of fresh fruit every month for a year!

The next (and final) part of the triathlon challenge sees the team swim the distance of the English Channel between 10th September and 2nd December 2012 in their local pools to raise money for Aspire.

Through its projects and programmes, Aspire offers practical support to the 40,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK so that they can lead fulfilled and independent lives in their homes, with their families, in workplaces and in leisure time.

The Aspire Channel Swim allow individuals, groups or companies to take on the challenge of swimming the English Channel (22 miles) in the warmth and comfort of their local swimming pool; doing as many or as few sessions as they like over a 12 week period.

Virya Technologies’ whole ethos is based on the Buddhist practice of Dana, (generous giving) so taking part in and promoting this event falls comfortably in line with that ethos. It also encourages individuals and businesses to come together to make a tangible difference in their communities something that Virya Technologies always aspires to do.

Of course, it also has the added benefit of encouraging the staff and their families to take part in regular exercise!

About Aspire (Spinal Injury Charity)

Aspire (Spinal Injury Charity): Spinal Cord Injury has a devastating effect on the 1,200 people who become paralysed each year. The individual affected will lose muscle and sensory control and the vast majority become full time wheelchair users for the rest of their lives. Historically, the majority of spinal cord injuries have been sustained by those aged 15 to 40, with men outnumbering women, although increasingly it is affecting older people too.
