Walk to Fight Cancer with MVNU Relay for Life Event

Mount Vernon Nazarene University will hold its first-ever Relay For Life event on April 30-May 1 in The Grove

Mt Vernon, OH, April 26, 2011 — Mount Vernon Nazarene University, a Christian University in Ohio is inviting Alumni, friends, faculty, staff and community members will form teams to walk to fight against cancer and to remember those heroes who lost their battles and to celebrate those who have overcome. All proceeds from this 18-hour walk will go to the American Cancer Society.

Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society event that gives communities across the world a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Each Relay starts with a Survivors’ Lap, an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories that have been achieved over cancer. After dark, loved ones lost to the disease are remembered with candle-lit luminaries bearing the name of a person touched by cancer. Lastly, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where participants make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.

MVNU has set a goal to raise $15,000 with 15 teams participating in the Relay. To donate or to join a team, visit MVNU’s Relay For Life event page at www.mvnu.edu/rfl.

Team registration requires a $10 payment per team member. MVNU also asks that each team set a goal for each member to raise a certain amount of money (e.g., $100 per member). Money can be raised in many ways, which captain meetings and e-mails will discuss. If you cannot raise $100, you are still encouraged to participate. Any amount raised over your goal is graciously accepted. If you are unable to participate in the Relay, financial contributions are still welcome.
