Warning to Parents – Cell Phones May Be Tool For Sex Predators

This month, November 7th, a listed violent sex offender, Donald Barton, left his cell phone in a hospital restroom in Knoxville, TN that led to his arrest. The evidence, a cellular phone with child pornography on it.

“With the technology available with cell phones, it doesn’t surprise me one bit”, says spokesman for TopSavings.Net, an online consumer and B2B site that sells wireless phones and plans. “Most phones come equipped with video cameras and Internet photo share, the potential for these crimes with this technology are ever present.”

While this one type of illegal activity may have been the focus of the Knoxville community, parents nationwide need to be aware of a much greater threat with cell phones. The threat not being the predator with a cell phone as much as the victims themselves.

It has recently been found and studied by the APA (American Psychological Association) that the larger population of child sex victims are teenagers, and much more alarming, about one quarter of reported cases are teenage boys. If it couldn’t get any more shocking, the sex is consented. With parents usually less concerned with male rape due to it’s previous rarity, this trend can expect to grow unless it’s dealt with in it’s infancy in this disturbing trend.

“The main issue with this potential problem is that parents buy their teenage son’s cell phones and figure they will only be chatting with girls, friends, and family. There is not adequate supervision,” says Aaron Siegel of TopSavings.Net. “Females are no longer the main target, and with cell phones, the crimes can go mobile and unnoticed in a very quick frame of time without a parent ever knowing or suspecting something is going wrong. It’s disturbing to imagine.”

There are some companies now offering ways to spy on their teenager’s cell phones via software, however the problem still lies in the fact that these softwares will only work on a smartphone. The software uses an online login for parents to use to see who their teenager’s are text messaging and calling, undetected to the cell phone user. This parental spy industry can expect to grow as technology closes the gap between society and criminals.
