Dr. Chez F. Cristiano has designed the Work Burnout Screener that is free to the public. Many people who are experiencing burnout do not realize it. They know they might have a lack of energy or feel depressed or maybe even angry; however, they tend to deny being burned out. Burnout is common among people in positions that have a high degree of dedication to their work, high performance expectations, and/or psychologically draining situations.

Stress is an everyday part of life that is unavoidable. Workplace stress that is harmful can be reduced and prevented to a certain degree, whereas burnout is a chronic form of stress that can become long-term and disabling. Burnout has increased significantly over the last 5 years due to downsizing and the increase in workload to the employees that remained.

It doesn?t help that people at all levels of the corporate world in the US are afraid to lose their job while on vacation, so they only take 3-day weekends for a brief getaway and break from the office. In order to fully recharge, people should be taking their normal full vacation on a yearly basis. Employees in Western Europe usually enjoy vacations that are twice as long as the average vacation taken by Americans. One might think this some silly socialistic indulgence, but it is actually a very smart move on the part of corporations and society that helps organizations and employees stay healthier. Recovery from burnout can range from an extended vacation to absence from work and healthcare costs that result huge in problems for the individual and the respective organization.

If you think that you might be experiencing burnout, seek the help of professionals like your MD and a psychologist to help determine that is the problem. A plan of action should be created and implemented as soon as possible to limit the potential problems. It is important to learn how to manage stress better, in order to avoid burnout. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways like regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, limiting caffeine or caffeine like substances, allowing for some down time, listening to music, humor, etc. Remember, you cannot escape stress, but you can learn how to manage it and prevent burnout.
