Working at Home May Prevent Swine Flu Says Vidal Financial Consulting

The global panic over the spread of Swine Flu has created widespread discussions from private and public officials over the desirability of having people work from home. Vidal Financial Consulting sees this as a way to accelerate the trends in the U.S. for more people to work at home and even start home businesses.

Annapolis, MD, April 29, 2009 — Work at Home and you’ll stay alive – that is the rather dramatic message from officials all over the world who are trying to contain the rising fear over a swine flu epidemic. This message has come not only from the U.S. and Mexico but also Asia and Europe: if you are afraid of the swine flu, then work from home.
Leo J. Vidal, JD, MA, CPA, President of Vidal Financial Consulting, cites the following as just a few cases where working at home discussions are part of the Swine Flu preparedness plans:

1. The Institute for Business & Home Safety cautioned businesses and nonprofit organizations to examine their ability to operate in the event of a flu pandemic. The institute outlined five pandemic preparedness steps, including: develop business continuity policies that provide work-at-home options
2. According to the Christian Science Monitor, in Mexico “some companies have closed down their offices in Mexico City, or told their employees to work at home”
3. From IT BusinessEdge: “One of the ways to limit the spread of diseases like this one is to avoid forcing a lot of people into the same small space. If you have an outbreak, the people who weren’t at work will likely survive it and can keep the company running. This would suggest that if there ever was a time to suddenly get liberal when it comes to work-at-home policies, now would be a good time to make that happen.”

“These officials don’t want to create a panic, but what they recommend is very sensible”, says Mr. Vidal. “It is prudent to do home business rather than commute to a public place if there is risk involved. With internet businesses on the rise, and many companies allowing telecommuting, it should not be a loss for businesses if workers can work at home on the internet. They can be productive, and avoid health dangers in the workplace.” There are also very significant tax savings with a home-based business, Mr. Vidal added.

Many officials may want to use this latest health panic as a type of business opportunity – not just to have people stay at home but also to make money from home permanently, said Mr. Vidal. “There are now hundreds of ways to make money on the internet,” he said. “There are also hundreds of websites such as www.myinternetcashathome.com that provide income-making information for the serious businessman, the part-time worker, or the stay at home Mom. It’s not just for those who want a job but also for people who want a business opportunity.”

Mr. Vidal indicated that governments have been making more help available even before this latest health scare. He said that many government officials recognize the value of helping laid-off workers and retirees generate income by working from home. And with inflation in gas prices and most other things, the internet at-home businesses are especially attractive because of their low start-up costs. “Home-based work will provide the retirement income stream that many retirees are looking for who have lost a lot of money in the stock market,” he said.

According to Mr. Vidal, not only will can workers avoid the swine flu (and other deadly diseases like Staph or MRSA) by working from home, but they are likely to be happier because they don’t have to fight traffic each day and can spend more time with their families.
