Parnell, Auckland, September 30, 2010 — Mission Live Life is about creating awareness of how a change in lifestyle can benefit the environment. Indigo Foundation is about helping people in need around the world to change their lives. Te Araroa – Mission Live Life is what happens when two young women set out on the adventure of a lifetime, a 1,864 mile trek the length of New Zealand.

Shalane Hopkins and Alex Ward, one from Canada, one from England, met at a campground in Western Australia. They discovered their shared passion for outdoor adventure. They both have extensive experience with hiking and backpacking in many countries.

Shalane has always been interested in sports and outdoor activities. She swims, bicycles snowboards and scuba dives. However, her biggest adventure to date was in July 2009 when she hiked alone across British Columbia from Banff to Vancouver.

Alex also has a history of long distance trekking. One of her more recent adventures was the Annapurna Trail in Nepal. She has also made a number of treks across India, China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Borneo, often camping or living in local villages along the way. So now has decided to take on the challenge of Te Araroa.

Considering how much time they spend outdoors it would seem only natural that they would share a passion for nature. They want to raise awareness about keeping the environment clean and beautiful for future travelers. They want people to be aware of decisions that affect the environment throughout the world.

As women who participate in challenging activities they want to encourage other women to do the same. They feel that because many women underestimate their own abilities they miss out on a lot of fun. They want women to know that the world of adventure can belong to them too.

They say that one of the goals of their New Zealand journey is to inspire others to reach for the stars. It’s about giving back to the environment and about helping those in need. It’s about getting back to the basics and enjoying life for every moment it brings.

As world travelers who have met many different kinds of people. They have become more aware of other cultures. They have begun to appreciate the unique contributions made by various cultures but also the problems and challenges they face.

Considering all of their shared interests and concerns it seems only natural that the two would connect with an organization that focuses it efforts on making a positive difference in the lives of diverse peoples. Indigo foundation is a small independent organization, based in Australia. It provides assistance in public health & education to people in marginalized communities around the world.

Shalane and Alex decided to raise money for their Solomon Island project. By the time they complete the Te Araroa trek from Cape Reinga in the north to Bluff in the south they hope to reach their goal of $10,000AUD.

They have built websites and blogs where people can keep track of their progress and make donations. The community the money is being raised for has been affected by natural disasters and a complicated history. The money would help to provide education for both children and adults, giving them life skills to meet future challenges. If Shalane and Alex meet their goal the money would support the Solomon Islands project for two years.
