London, England, October 24, 2009 — 24 7 Parking, experts in finding accessible parking in London, wish to draw your attention to recent increases of fare charges levied by rail companies.

The UK economy is in recession and inflation is set at almost 0%, however rail companies have raised fares by more than 11% on some routes, leading to accusations that they are exploiting passengers. They’ve also made it difficult to find fare-deals, mainly burying details online.

A report, prepared by the House of Commons Transport Committee, also accuses rail companies of ‘back-door fare rises’, such as charging ‘prohibitive’ prices for seat reservations. Chairman MP Louise Ellman said, “There is no point involving the private sector if companies can cream off the profits in good times, but leave passengers and taxpayers to pick up the bill when hard times hit.”

It’s clear then that the current franchising system doesn’t always serve the best interests of passengers – one suggested reform is to grant longer franchises, but as selective information is offered up about the financial stability of operators, would that just give operators longer to exploit?

The general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) Bob Crow said that “people are getting ripped off.” It is however hoped that tougher regulations implemented from January 2010 will stem further increases and save the passenger more purse strain.

“Rail used to be an affordable option for commuters, but with a hike in both parking charges and riding costs you’d be as well to drive straight into work,” says Nick Mordin of 24 7 Parking. “Our parking solutions are scattered across London so we could make driving into the city a convenient reality. Secure, accessible and undercover, we’ve got parking covered so you can enjoy your day.”
