Virtual tour of all works facilities by means of TWMS/metals.

With the latest software release, Release 2.0, 3tn has considerably expanded the field of application of its proven Technical Warehouse Management System TWMS/metals. The new program version is designed to provide easy scalability and control parameter setting as well as support in warehouse logistics for complete works complexes.

Right after the first announcement of Release 2.0, 3tn could book three new orders of the system. One is for the complete warehousing and transport management at a new steel works recently commissioned in the USA.

3tn enhanced its system by features such as freely adjustable control parameters for more efficient management of the transport functions and optimized warehousing. Integrated control editors enable the parameters to be modified during running operations.

The change-over to a service-oriented architecture (SOA) provides optimized scalability and serviceability of the system. If required, processes can be handled by several servers, allowing the system to grow in line with customer requirements.

The software architecture implemented by 3tn also allows updates and service activities that only relate to certain areas of the works to be performed without affecting the overall system. This significantly increases general availability of the system.

3tn also further enhanced real-time visualization of the warehouse and transport activities in 3D. Via new dialogues, the user has now much more liberty in customizing visualization of his warehousing or transport activities.

Background
The Technical Warehouse Management System/metals (TWMS/metals) controls and visualizes transport and storage activities in the metals industry from continuous casting through to shipment of the finished long and flat products.

It constantly provides the operator with a real-time overview of the warehousing situation, optimizes control of transport activities and performs automatic inventory tracking. These functions provide for highly efficient use of resources and increased planning reliability. They also avoid damage to the products due to improper storage, leading to reduced costs.

The system determines the optimal storage place, the best suited combination of transport means and the best route to the storage place. In doing so, it takes into account the current inventory situation, availability of resources as well as control parameters that may optimize or restrict transport operations and warehousing. TWMS/metals triggers orders for the vehicle operators and automated means of transport, such as automatic cranes or coil ferries.

As a further feature, TWMS/metals generates realistic real-time 3D displays of the current inventory situation and the status of the transport means. The situation can be viewed from freely selectable positions and angles.

TWMS/metals is embedded between the levels of ERP, MES and the automation and sensor systems. Contrary to the way higher-level systems work, TWMS/metals is capable of directly processing the data transmitted from sensors, e.g. on cranes or vehicles, and sending control signals to the relevant means of transport.

About 3tn
Thomas Niepmann and Thorsten Tönjes founded 3tn in 1999 after several years of working together on warehouse management projects in the metals industry.

Their business plan was to develop customer-specific software solutions for optimizing material movement, specifically adapting to the requirements of the metals industry. This philosophy has been consistently followed ever since.

The 3tn team consists of software developers, computer scientists, electrical technicians and engineers. Their expertise covers every stage of a project, from analyses and feasibility studies, through software development, all the way to project management, commissioning, and user training. Experienced technicians ensure comprehensive after sales support and constant on-call service.
