9th Annual Row for the Cure® to Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego
San Diego, CA, October 21, 2010 — Grab your oars and paddles and come out to support the 9th Annual Row for the Cure® in Mission Bay, October 31, 2010. This regatta is a 4.5 km race beginning at South Shores on Mission Bay, passing by the water side of Sea World, around Vacation Island and Paradise Point, finishing just North of Ski Beach.
All entry fees and donations benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego. 75% of every dollar donated stays in San Diego County to cover every step of the breast cancer journey for uninsured and underinsured women. The remaining 25% funds international research. Next to the U.S. government, Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world!
“The Row for the Cure® is an exciting collaboration between Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the collegiate and water sports communities,” said Pattie Pinkerton, head coach for UC San Diego’s Women’s Crew. “With one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, the women rowing in our eights know one of their team mates will face this potential killer. We want to help find a cure, and help pay for early detection.”
Pinkerton encourages rowers and kayakers of all levels to participate. For those not interested in racing, seating is available on the barge and onlookers can watch the row go by. UC San Diego’s rowers will be teaching individuals and groups how to row in their stable rowing barge and the Dragon Boat community will offer a chance to try their boats. Costs range from $25 to $90 depending on whether you’re rowing as an individual or on a team, kayaking or observing on the barge.

About Row for the Cure®
The inspiration of Portland, Oregon rower Kathy Frederick, the initial Row for the Cure® took place in 1994 on Portland’s Willamette River as a way for the rowing community to support runners and walkers participating in the Rose City’s Race for the Cure®. That first regatta raised a modest $1,500.
Today, with events in 15 U.S. states and Germany, Row for the Cure® has blossomed into a multi-sport event that includes athletes of all ages representing four sports; rowing, canoe/kayak, dragon boat and Native American paddling. With over 20 cities having hosted a Row for the Cure®, participants now raise over $300,000 annually, rowing and paddling together to save lives in their local communities.

Why is the Race for the Cure® so important to San Diego County?
Since launching the breast cancer movement more than 30 years ago, Komen for the Cure has transformed the culture – bringing breast cancer out of the closet – changing the way the world talks about and treats this devastating disease. During the journey, it was often controversial and considered inappropriate to discuss diseases of the breast openly. We’ve come a long way – but we face new challenges. Here in San Diego County, many underserved women find breast cancer at a later and more aggressive stage and have a higher mortality rate. Still others have lost their jobs and can’t afford medical insurance. All of this is compounded by the California state budget crisis which forced the closure of the only free mammogram program open to women in this state. So, we’re doubling our efforts here at Komen San Diego to do what we can to raise additional funds. We raise funds primarily through the Race for the Cure®.
