The fifth annual Art of Photography Show, an international competition and exhibition of photographic art, welcomes its judge, Charlotte Cotton, author of The Photograph as Contemporary Art, one of the most well-used introductions to the field, for a special free talk and discussion on the scope of contemporary art photography and also the trends and challenges for this sphere of photography. San Diego, CA, July 28, 2009 — The fifth annual Art of Photography Show (artofphotographyshow.com), an international competition and exhibition of photographic art, welcomes its judge, Charlotte Cotton, author of The Photograph as Contemporary Art, one of the most well-used introductions to the field, for a special free talk and discussion on the scope of contemporary art photography and also the trends and challenges for this sphere of photography.
Scheduled for Sunday, August 30th at noon, this event will be a “must see” presentation for collectors of photography as well as artists working toward being exhibited in high-end galleries or museums, and for anyone interested in photography as contemporary art. Her talk will be in the Lyceum Theatre Gallery, which is the site of this international exhibition — located in Horton Plaza, in the historic Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego.
In 2007, Ms. Cotton started the on-line and live debate project Words Without Pictures – a year-long project that explored new and pressing developments concerning photographic practice. Over 90 artists, curators, bloggers and photographers contributed to this project, recently published as a 500-page print-on-demand book. Ms. Cotton will summarize some of the most relevant themes of Words Without Pictures, in relation to the Art of Photography Show 2009, as-well-as describe her curatorial decisions for this year’s exhibition selection.
The fifth annual Art of Photography Show will debut the top 111 photographs on August 29, 2009 with the Opening Reception Gala and Awards Ceremony at Lyceum Theatre Gallery. This free public reception will take place from 6 to 10 pm and is expected to attract over 1,500 people, including artists and collectors from around the world.
The final photographs were judged and selected from 16,000 entries from 57 countries by Ms. Cotton, the Curator and Head of the Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The fact that the Art of Photography Show is judged by a major museum curator each year is what differentiates the competition from other competitions. Photographers rarely have the opportunity to reach these respected and influential people, which is why the show receives so many entries from world-renowned photographers.
This world-class photography exhibit will run August 29 to November 1, 2009 and is expected to be viewed by over 25,000 people. An elegant 80-page show catalog will be given away to everyone at the Opening Reception Gala on August 29th. A total of $10,000 in cash awards will be presented that night to the top 15 artists chosen by Ms. Cotton.
