Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon Proposes Three-Pronged Approach for Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS, a Beverly Hills-based cosmetic surgeon stresses the importance of a three-tier system in achieving a youthful-looking face. The three steps involved are (1) injection treatment of facial rejuvenation products such as Restylane, Juvederm and Botox; (2) other skin products and non invasive laser treatment such as the Pixel Laser Resurfacing and; 3) facelift or surgery.

Beverly Hills-based cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jay Calvert explained that achieving and maintaining a youthful-looking face requires three important steps. The necessary procedures for the facial rejuvenation process depend on several factors like the age, genetics, and the areas that need attention. The three steps, which are medical injections, laser treatment and surgery, or any combination of the said procedures, may be the right approach to take at any given age.

Restylane and Juvéderm are dermal fillers that revitalize the facial appearance by enhancing volume and decreasing the appearance of lines. Botox is another non-surgical injection treatment that blocks nerve impulses to the tiny facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Pixel Laser Resurfacing is the use of laser beams to remove damaged outer layers of the skin and stimulate collagen and new skin cell production. A complete facelift is a surgical procedure that includes elevation of the jowls, mid-face, neck, brows and even eyelids. Dr. Calvert stated that the right time to avail of these procedures depends on how the person views their current appearance and how they want it to progress over time. He added that people as young as 25 can benefit from any, or a combination of these treatments.

“For all patients, the best approach is a staged approach, just like the approach to keeping a youthful look,” replied Dr. Calvert when asked about the facial rejuvenation process. He stressed the importance of developing a long-term relationship between patients and their plastic surgeon in order to track the progress of the treatments and determine which step to use at any given stage. “There are no quick fixes to undo the aging that has occurred over decades. However, some fixes are more aggressive than others and that is why timing and preparation for the facelift procedure is so important,” Dr. Calvert added.

When deciding to undergo the facial rejuvenation process, patients are advised to start with the least invasive medical procedure, but the cases vary depending on the stage of aging that is present on the skin. Typically, patients in their late 20’s undergo the Restylane, Juvéderm and Botox treatment coupled with other skin products and Pixel Laser Resurfacing. Patients in their late 30’s seek brow-lifts, eyelid surgery and formal facelifts when signs of premature aging are visible. The candidates for facelift surgery are mostly patients on their 40’s or over.
