Castle Cover’s tips for preventing a burst water pipe this winter

Winter can cause all kinds of problems when it brings ice, snow and freezing temperatures. But one of the worst is a burst water pipe in the home. Castle Cover recommends that its home insurance customers follow these simple guidelines to avoid a frozen water pipe and the havoc it can bring.

Flooding, collapsed ceilings, destroyed furniture and an uninhabitable property are just some of the consequences of a burst water pipe. To protect your home this winter follow these simple prevention tips:

1. Insulate the pipes in your attic and crawl spaces in your home – these are the most exposed to freezing.

2. Seal any leaks near where the pipes are located. In very cold temperatures, even the smallest opening can let in enough of a breeze to freeze a pipe.

3. Turn off outside faucets. Disconnect the hose and drain the pipe. Leave the outside valve open slightly so that the remaining water in the pipe can flow out, and not freeze in the line.

4. Don’t shut off your heat completely. If you are leaving the house for an extended period of time, you should lower the thermostat, but never shut it off. The lack of heat can freeze pipes in the walls. A temperature no lower than 55f (12oC) is advisable.

5. Consider draining your system if you are going to be away over the winter.

In case of a burst pipe, you may want to consider adding Home Emergency to your policy. Home Emergency cover is available from Castle Cover from £5.97 per month (including APR). It covers all kinds of situations from plumbing, heating systems and roofs, to electricity supply, doors, windows and external locks.

Access to vetted professional specialist tradesmen is provided, as well as a 24-hour emergency helpline. Castle Cover’s Home Emergency claims department organise and pay up to £300 on call outs, labour, parts and materials to carry out an emergency repair. If the property is uninhabitable overnight, Castle Cover will pay up to £250 (including VAT) for overnight accommodation and/or transport to the accommodation.

Andy Cole, Marketing Director at Castle Cover, says: “A burst water pipe can devastate a home; a flood can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage. In those cases, Home Emergency cover is invaluable. And it’s worth spending the time to take a few precautionary measures to reduce a risk of a problem this winter.”
