ENCINITAS, Calif., March. 21, 2011 – Hansen Surfboards, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will go barefoot April 5 to raise awareness for One Day Without Shoes.
Research by the organizers of One Day Without Shoes have found that millions of kids round the world do not own a pair of shoes and as such, run the increased risk of infection and disease.
“We’re collaborating in One Day Without Shoes because we would like people to walk into our store and ask why everyone seems to be barefoot,” said Josh Hansen. “We are doing this for those people who are going barefoot because they have got no choice. The impact of two shoes might be huge on someone’s life if that person didn’t have shoes before.”
To add to One Day Without Shoes, Hansen Surfboards also participates in Soles4Souls every year. The campaign encourages the public to leave their unwanted shoes at Hansen Surfboards in exchange for a discounted 10% off a new pair of shoes or sandals for every pair donated at the store.
“The donated shoes add up pretty quickly, so whenever we can’t keep more of them gathered at the back of the store, I drive out to Las Vegas towing a trailer full of these shoes and donate them to charity so people without shoes can use them,” added Josh. “Last year I drove there with a trailer filled with 3,500 pounds of shoes. It’s amongst our best programs here because we know it has such a large impact.”
