“I know from personal experience how easy it is to come to the East Bay and never leave,” says Dark. “Oakland’s a friendly city with cohesive neighborhoods and neighbors that look out for each other. I arrived just after the Summer of Love from a harsh Wisconsin winter and have never looked back. So I’m not surprised that newcomers and returning empty-nesters alike are drawn to the area.”
Since there’s much more to making a home than just a house and lot, Dark stays committed to the communities she represents and particularly the youth that grow up in them. Chief among her interests are the Piedmont Elementary School and the Piedmont Avenue Library. She was once the founding executive director of the Oakland Youthworks and was actively involved in matching young folks with jobs that suited their skills. It’s this kind of persistent support that makes it possible for the charming, stable communities like Piedmont Avenue to continue to develop in a challenging economy.
“Piedmont Ave. has always been a walking neighborhood,” according to Dark. “Every imaginable service is nearby. Public transportation is easy. It’s no problem to park the car and keep a tiny carbon footprint for days at a time. That’s just one reason I like living in the East Bay so much myself.”
