Common questions asked in home study of adoption process

C

Adoption is the method by which a childless couple is granted parenthood and custody of a child. People who have biological children but are willing to and capable of bringing up other children also are given orphaned children to care for. In exceptional cases unmarried individuals or persons living alone are allowed to take children in adoption.

Children who have no parents or kith to look after them are placed in the care of voluntary organizations also known as adoption agencies. When people approach these homes for adopting a child, they have to give their information such as their age, profession or employment details, domestic circumstances etc. so that a picture of the home that a child might live is obtained. These Adoption agencies send the information to government authorities such as courts or bureaucratic offices that eventually issue certificates or decrees by which a child becomes a lawful daughter/son of the adopting couple/individual.

The categories of children that are offered for adoption are infants, minors and children with special needs. Infants are children in the age group of 0-5 years. These children require a mother’s love in family surroundings the most, so they are given in adoption only to married couples. It is important that the child and the couple are drawn to one and another naturally and that there is love and affection between them.

Minors are children aged 5-17. As they are older and have a better understanding about themselves and family, their wishes are taken into consideration before they are given in adoption. Usually they are habituated to life in adoption agencies, so the adoption might bring change difficult to adjust to, so the adoption of all such children is to be done with extra care. The adoption of children with special needs is about children that are physically or mentally challenged and who might be under disabilities such as autism or stunted growth etc. These children are given only to qualified therapists and such other professionals who have specialized qualification and experience as well as passion for transforming a disabled child into a much abler adult.
