The tablet market has really exploded over the past couple of years. Among the top contenders are the HP TouchPad and the Motorola Xoom. Just what do these two heavyweights have to offer?

The HP TouchPad is available now in 16GB form, and will shortly also be available with 32GB of inbuilt storage.

The HP TouchPad comes with version 3.0 of the famous webOS operating system, complemented by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM.

Applications and features are displayed as cards, which are groupable either manually or automatically in stacks so that you can quickly and easily multi-task.

The Motorola Xoom features version 3.0 of the Android operating system, Honeycomb, which has specifically designed to give Android OS benefits to tablets.

The HP TouchPad has been designed to make communication and integration simple, so whenever you are connected to the web all you need to do is start typing a contact’s name and you will be able to write on their Facebook wall, send them an email and access all of their contact information without having to launch individual programs. It also has a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera for video calling, and you can view all of your photographs from various sites, such as Facebook and Photobucket, in one place thanks to the Photo app.

Meanwhile, the Motorola Xoom has been designed with video calling in mind. It has a 2 megapixel front facing camera and a 5 megapixel camera in the back with 720p video capture. It has an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and all of Google’s latest apps for books, music and apps, along with that all important Adobe Flash Player support.

The HP TouchPad also has Adobe Flash 10.1 and support for Google Docs, meaning it’s easy to access your important documents wherever you are. You can even connect with compatible networked HP printers, thanks to Box.net. And if listening to music is your thing, Beats Audio gives top sound quality.

There’s also Touchstone technology, which enables you to integrate with other HP devices, including smartphones.
The Motorola Xoom comes with a range of accessories, including a wireless keyboard, handy if you have a lot of text to input. It is now upgradable to Android 3.1, enabling you to use a Bluetooth mouse, too.

The Motorola Xoom is available from Clove Technology for £558 including VAT, while the 32GB of the HP Touch Pad is now on pre-order, for £479.99 including VAT.
