Training a new dog should be a family activity in which everyone participates. Your dog may see one family member as the one in charge, but other family members need to be consistent in their expectations of the dog’s behavior also.

Use a phrase on your puppy to house train him. Every single time you take your pup to do his business, say something like “need to go out?”. It does not matter the phrase you choose, as long as you keep it consistent. This will keep him focused, and will teach him to associate those words with the action of relieving himself.

One way to ensure your dog’s cooperation during the training process is to know what type of treats it prefers. Your dog will be more likely to respond to your training efforts when the food reward is something he likes. Pay close attention to how much he likes a treat and if it doesn’t seem to excite him, try a different treat.

If your dog suddenly starts misbehaving out of the blue, it is best to bring him to the vet so any health problems can be ruled out. A dog can start behaving badly if they are experiencing pain or having health issues. This is how animals communicate the fact that there is something wrong with them, since they are unable to inform us directly.

Give your puppy time to be okay with a crate by taking the training one small step at a time. After they become used to each individual step and do not mind going inside the crate, try shutting the door and giving them treats with the door closed. Start off only putting them inside for 10 seconds, and when they seem okay with that, slowly increase the time they are inside. If the puppy gets too upset then you increased the time too much, too fast.

There are different tricks you can try when you are crate training your dog. If your puppy doesn’t like being in his crate, put a dog treat or chew bone in it and close the door to keep him out. The dog will smell the bone and want to go racing into the crate to eat it. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.

Ensure your dogs are active and getting a lot of exercises. Dogs can easily get bored. Bored dogs are harder to train. If you have a happy, exercised dog, they will listen better. Before every training session, prepare your dog by taking them for a walk.

Make sure that everybody in your household is uniform when it comes to issuing dog commands. Make sure everyone is on the same page with command words; if the command for being quiet is “quiet,” don’t let anyone use “stop barking.” If all members of the family use the same commands, training your dog will be much more easier.

Even when you are tired or tense, be conscious of how you speak to your dog. Keep in mind that unless your dog has misbehaved immediately before your interaction, your behavior toward the dog should be positive in nature.

As you begin a new training program for your dog, it is important to commit yourself to the process – don’t give up! Your dog will not remember his training if you are not there to constantly remind him of what you expect. You always need to keep training your dog, just like you need to continue feeding it and providing it shelter.

Untrained dogs are not a pleasure to be around, and they can destroy your house. If you follow the guidelines in this article, you will be more effective while training your dog.
