Dr. Dharmendra S. Sengar appointed as Director of Indian Law Institute
Dr. Sengar was earlier the Vice Chancellor of Mohanlal Sukhadia University and a Professor at IIM Lucknow

Dr. Dharmendra S. Sengar, a renowned specialist in environmental law, contracts management and arbitration, has taken over as the Director, Indian Law Institute. Dr. DS Sengar relinquished the post of Vice- Chancellor of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur to take charge of the position of Director at Indian Law Institute for a period of five years. He has been appointed to the post by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, the President of Indian Law Institute(ILI).

Prior to becoming the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sengar was a Professor and Area Chairman, Legal Management Group at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow. He holds his Doctoral degree in Law from the University of Lucknow and has a unique distinction of being the first to receive Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute Fellowship for post-doctoral research in the area of Environmental Law at University of Calgary, Canada. He was a senior Fulbright Fellow at The George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C. Dr. Sengar is the recipient of Fulbright Alumni Grant Award from the U.S Department of State for promoting Enviro-legal Awareness among youth.

Dr. Sengar has more than 27 years of academic, administrative and professional experience at various prominent institutions in the country and overseas. Dr. Sengar has an academic exposure and experience sharing at more than 33 prestigious institutions in USA, UK, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia. His book on Environmental Law(2007) published by the Prentice-Hall has been very well received. It highlights problems such as public health and safety, right to carry on trade vis-a-vis duty to protect environment, right to information about hazardous installations, right to clean environment, and ecological balance for sustainable development.

Dr. Sengar’s area of special interest involves Corporate Law, Contract Management & Arbitration, Intellectual Property Management, Environmental Law and International Business Law.

Dr. Sengar has a very rich experience of academic administration and management. Before, joining IIM Lucknow, he was Joint Director at Uttar Pradesh Academy of Administration, Nainital. At IIM Lucknow, he was Chief Vigilance Officer & Chairman, Student Affairs, where he was responsible for guiding the students in their activities under corporate social responsibility programme as Chairman, Committee for Social Initiatives.

Dr. DS Sengar has contributed papers/articles on contemporary legal issues in various conferences/journals of national and international repute. At IIML, he taught course on Legal Aspects of Management to MBA, ABM and PhD (Fellow) students and directed their group assignments on contractual issues in national and international business. He has also been Chairman of the Social Initiatives Committee(Bhavishya) at IIM Lucknow. Dr. Sengar was instrumental in implementing IIML’s initiative to Adopt–a-Village Scheme. Due to his efforts the village Chakarpurwa is now enjoying the facility of electricity.

Prof Sengar has guided, counselled and supervised the initiatives in the domains of education, unemployment, health, environment, women empowerment and rural upliftment for socio-economic improvement and infrastructure development. He was the prime motivator for the students of IIM Lucknow to adopt the village for its infrastructure and socio-economic development under Institute’s social commitment.

About ILI:

The Indian Law Institute (ILI) was founded in 1956 primarily with the objective of promoting and conducting legal research. The objectives of the Institute as laid down in its Memorandum of Association are to cultivate the science of law, to promote advanced studies and research in law so as to meet the social, economic and other needs of the Indian people, to promote systematization of law, to encourage and conduct investigations in legal and allied fields, to improve legal education, to impart instructions in law, and to publish studies, books, periodicals, etc.

Hon’ble Chief Justice of India is the ex-officio President of the Institute. The Law Minister of Government of India & the Attorney-General for India are its ex-officio Vice Presidents. Third Vice-President is elected by the members of the Governing Council, from among themselves. Judges of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and High Courts, prominent lawyers, Government officials and Professors of Law are represented in the Governing Council of the Institute.

The Indian Law Institute has been granted Deemed University Status in 2004 vide Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development Notification No. F.9-9/2001-U.3 dated 29.10.2004.
