By setting the lofty goal of registering one million adults for college in one year, the Million Student Project plans to transform the country through education
Orlando, FL July 22, 2009 — A group of retired and current educators have launched a new initiative called the Million Student Project with one goal: to encourage one million adults to register for college within the next year. By doing so the group believes that it will not only improve the lives and prospects of the new students who are enrolling, but also improve the country’s competitiveness with other countries in the world economy.
Inspired by President Barack Obama’s campaign speech that asserted one voice can spark a movement that can change the world, the project was conceived as an army of community members talking one on one with people whose lives could benefit from a college degree. This one voice in a room, multiplied over a million rooms, can affect positive change for everyone in the country.
Far too often people find excuses to not make the effort to pursue a college degree. An encouraging word from someone whose life was positively changed by the experience, someone who has “been there”, is all it takes to convince that person of the benefits they’ll receive from an education. The Million Student Project arms its community of volunteers with that tools that they will need to assist these people make the decision.
Once a person decides to attend school, he or she can sign up as a student through the organization’s website. Site volunteers will then match that person’s career goals with available schools that can also cater to his or her busy life schedule. Once a suitable match has been agreed upon, the volunteer will put the person in contact with the school to discuss enrollment and financial aid if necessary.
Through the effort of those who really believe their lives were transformed by education, and wish to share those experiences with others, the group believes it’s possible to achieve its goal of one million students in one year. All they need now are the volunteers to make this dream become a reality.
