UK’s GetMapping site (www.getmapping.com) uses quick-growing light technology to produce cost-efficient maps
Hampshire, United Kingdom, 20th March 2010- GetMapping are to use Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to produce enhanced quality topographical maps at superb prices. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) images are obtained from powerful, wide-sweep laser beams that wash over a terrain from an airborne source.
The Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) picture thus received gives a 3-dimensional elevation map accurate to within a plus or minus of 15 centimetres.
The application of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) extends to 3-d terrain mapping, ordinary aerial mapping and all cartographical requirements where elevations need to be known.
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is particularly useful for geologists – it can be used to supply a “Digital Surface Model” (DSM) so comprehensive that the underlying structure of terrain (DTM, or Digital Terrain Model) can be inferred with incredible accuracy. For surveying purposes, where prospective construction projects need to know that the lie of the land is in their favour, the DSM and DTM maps obtainable through Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) are indispensable.
GetMapping are currently operating Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems over all major UK cities, with plans to use the technology further in creating detailed topological images of the British Isles. The Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems GetMapping are using are hosted by two of the UK’s most experienced proponents of the technique – the Environment Agency, whose 11-year archive of LiDAR data covers over 62% of England and Wales; and Cities Revealed, whose coverage presently extends to Britain’s biggest cities.
