The vast majority of people expect to pay for their airport parking and shuttle services, but legislators using the city of Los Angeles-owned airport LAX have benefitted from free parking, courtesy of the city.
Los Angeles, CA, May 25, 2011 — The airport authority, which also owns Ontario Airport, is said to have given out free parking passes to a range of legislators. This included Assembly members such as Jeff Miller, Paul Cook, Steven Bradford, Julia Brownley, Mike Davis and more, who benefitted from free parking and shuttle services worth between $90 and $560. Others receiving such gifts from the LAX authority include a member of the California Transportation Commission, Joseph Tavaglione, and Jerome Horton of the Board of Equalization.
It isn’t just the city of Los Angeles that has been engaging in this practice, either. In the first quarter of 2011, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is said to have given out more than $8000 worth of free parking passes to legislators, including both Republican and Democratic senators. Assemblymen and a candidate for the mayorship also benefited from the preferential parking treatment, which is sure to raise questions with anyone who has ever found it hard to find parking at their local airport.
Both authorities in question – San Diego and Los Angeles – are also said to have paid tens of thousands of dollars each to lobbying firms in the first quarter of the year. Whatever their motives for doing so, it seems unlikely that regular airport users will be enjoying the free parking benefits of their legislative counterparts any time soon.
