A number of states in the US have already passed a ban on this distracting activity. It’s becoming an epidemic to a point that Federal Government is conducting a summit on distracting drivers. Insurance companies are beginning to back check on telephone company records to find out if people were texting or talking on their phones when they had their accident.
One of the local cities taking a stand on distracted drivers is Miami, Florida. Miami, recently passed a ban on texting on cell phones while driving in school zones. Miami’s City Commissioner Joe Sanchez based his efforts in spearheading the ban while dropping his children at school and seeing another driver almost hit a child while texting. “People know they have to slow down in school zones, but instead of taking the time to be alert of children in the crosswalk, they take advantage of the slower speed to check and send text messages. That’s a recipe for disaster,” the Commissioner said.
