Marks Sokolov & Burd Partner Gene Burd Will Discuss Legal Issues Surrounding Foreign Investments in Ukraine. Key Issues in Navigating the Restored OPIC Program Will Be Addressed.

Philadelphia, PA, January 12, 2010 — Marks, Sokolov & Burd is proud to announce that Partner Gene Burd has been selected as a speaker for the “Fluent in OPIC” workshop to be held by the United States – Ukraine Business Council on January 20th in Washington, DC. The event is intended to guide US companies interested in Ukraine through the process of using OPIC to finance and insure business transactions.

After the United States recently restored Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) program funding for Ukraine, the United States – Ukraine Business Council (USUBC) chose to recognize this positive development by conducting an informational workshop. With aUkraine law office , Marks, Sokolov & Burd’s Gene Burd was chosen to be a member of a select group of instructors to help companies use this resource.

“OPIC helps U.S. businesses invest and manage risks overseas” explained international litigator Gene Burd. “The restoration of program funding for Ukraine paves the way for millions of dollars in potential U.S. private sector investment.” Working to get OPIC open for business in Ukraine has been one of the top priorities for the members of USUBC for several years.

Specializing in business law, international law firm Marks, Sokolov & Burd understands the impact that the restoration of the OPIC program could mean to Ukraine. Previously, OPIC had provided more than $254 million in financing and insurance to 21 projects in Ukraine, in sectors ranging from manufacturing and construction to energy and financial services.

“The consensus among lawyers in Kyiv is that the return of this program is good reason to be optimistic about improvement in both the local economy as well as the US – Ukraine business climate” said one attorney familiar with the region.

The “Fluent in OPIC” workshop will present a comprehensive, practical, hands-on, look on how to effectively use OPIC to finance or insure business transactions in Ukraine. “I’m excited to have been included in a panel with such a highly respected group and businesses should find this program very helpful” mentioned attorney Gene Burd. The workshop will address the application process, deal structures, sponsor requirements and commitments, approval procedure, realistic time frame estimates, costs, fees and legal and developmental issues.

“Fluent in OPIC” will be held from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, followed by the CELEBRATION RECEPTION from 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both events will be held at the Embassy of Ukraine 3350 M Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. More information on this event can be obtained from Iryna Teluk, USUBC Membership Director, at (240) 505-9494 or e-mail [email protected].
