Australia Needs Low Skilled Workers

Australia has introduced vocational educational training, in order to deal with the shortage of low skilled workers, however this may not be enough to deal with the backlog – immigration may be the answer.

Skills whether high level or low are high on the agenda for the Australian government, it is for this reason that the idea of education and training has come to the fore.

However the amount of those enrolling for training and the just 10% who ultimately qualify causes problems to arise. It is clear that foreigners are needed to fill in low skilled workforce shortages.

According to Liam Clifford of www.globalvisas.com, “
Australia has become a destination of choice for a diverse amount of people, and provides a range of opportunities for professionals.”

Despite this it is the highly skilled workers that take preference over the low skilled workers when it comes to immigration. Clifford believes that is should be shifted in order to deal with the need for low skilled workers.

The shortage of a lower skilled workforce is often attributed to Australia’s high minimum wage. Australia has the highest minimum wage in the world, it is believed that if this was dropped by as much as 20% more jobs would be available and more people could be hired, therefore more foreigners could benefit.

Last year showed the highest number of immigrants to Australia in history, numbering almost 180 000 people.

Despite this the required amount of low and high skilled workers coming to Australia is still not enough, this is according to a study entitles ‘Population and Australia’s Future Labour Force’ by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA).

Areas that are in need of lower skilled workers include the hospitality and transport sectors.
