We asked Professor Anthony Fauci, Director of the NIAIS, where we are going in terms of searching a cure against HIV.
Toulon, France, December 29, 2010 — In 2003, together with Professors Robert Gallo from Baltimore (USA), Roger Pomerantz from Philadelphia (USA) and Mario Stevenson from Worcester (USA) we launched the First Workshop on HIV Persistence, HIV Reservoirs and Eradication Strategies.
We are committed to understanding the mechanisms of HIV persistence in treated individuals and finding a ‘sterilizing cure’ or a ‘functional cure’ within the next decade.
We have also lately launched a Web Portal to strengthen the link between researchers in the world. This website offers news, articles, discussions, and interviews of renowned specialists.

Dr. Fauci was appointed Director of NIAID in 1984. He oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria and illness from potential agents of bioterrorism. Dr. Fauci has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how the AIDS virus destroys the body’s defenses leading to its susceptibility to deadly infections.
