The HTC Sensation and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are among 2011’s most eagerly awaited smartphones. Let’s see what you get from these two giants.
The successor to the hugely popular Samsung’s Galaxy S, the Samsung Galaxy S2 lives up to its predecessor’s reputation as an excellent and exceptionally useful Android smartphone.
There are two versions of the S2 to choose between, the 16GB variety currently on the market and the soon to be released 32GB. It’s worth mentioning that the 16GB can have its memory upgraded to 32GB via micro SD cards.
The Samsung Galaxy S II, like the Galaxy S II before it, runs Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, with a customised TouchWiz 4.0 skin to make everything run a lot more slickly. Among Gingerbread’s most saleable points is the support for Near Field Communication, which may enable the Galaxy S II to act as a digital wallet with future application development.
The HTC Sensation is set to be released in early June. As you would expect from HTC, this is another stunning device, which is the follow-up to the hugely popular HTC Desire HD.
This is an amazing upgrade, with an improved camera and a doubling of the available power among the key highlights.
The HTC Sensation also runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it comes with the new version of HTC’s custom Android skin, HTC Sense 3.0. This has such great features as enhanced social media functions, in-car navigation assistance and the highly useful ‘Flip to Silence’ feature that enables the ability to hush an incoming call.
Both of these smartphones are great to look at.
One of the most noticeable things about the Samsung Galaxy S2 is how skinny it is. It’s just 8.49mm thick, but despite being on the slender side it’s very sophisticated, the addition of a textured back, similar to that of the Galaxy Tab, adds further to this feel.
The HTC Sensation is 11.3mm thick so feels a bit weighty compared to the Galaxy S2, but there is a lot of power under the ergonomically pleasing bonnet.
As you would expect based on its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a great screen. The Super AMOLED screen was one of the key features of the Samsung Galaxy S and the younger brother features a Super AMOLED Plus screen measuring 4.3 inches. It has a 480×800 resolution, which is industry standard, but has a great depth of colours and brightness to a higher resolution screen.
The HTC Sensation has a 4.3-inch qHD Super-LCD screen, which also looks amazing although the Galaxy S2 just edges this category.
All important in smartphones these days, both have great cameras on their backs. Both sport an 8 megapixel beast, with LED flash, geo-tagging ability and autofocus. Both the phones also have secondary cameras on the front, the S2 offering an impressive 2MP front facing camera while the HTC Sensation has just a VGA camera on the front.
Both phones can take videos at 1080p at 30 frames per second.
When it comes to storing your vids and photographs, along with other media, both of these smartphones are capacious animals. However, the Samsung Galaxy II is the hands down winner here.
The HTC Sensation has 1GB of internal memory, compared with the 16GB or 32GB of the Samsung Galaxy 2, though it’s prudent to note that the HTC Sensation’s memory can be upped to 32GB via a MicroSD card.
Connectivity-wise, both of these smartphones are highly sophisticated and rightfully at the top end of the market. Both support wifi and have excellent 3G capabilities.
As dubbed by HTC, the Sensation is a ‘multimedia superphone’. The new HTC Watch service provides you with movies on demand, which can be enjoyed on the device’s large screen. When it comes to media sharing, there are plenty of options; DLNA capability offers the ability to wirelessly stream photos and videos to a compatible TV, while MHL technology provides HDMI out via the microUSB port.
The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is also great for watching movies on. Navigating Android and Samsung’s TouchWiz interface has been simplified with the addition of four key ‘hubs’; the Games, Readers, Music and Social hubs. The hubs incorporate various key applications and features to make finding what you need to use or download just that much easier. The Live Panel feature will also enable seamless customisation of your home screen.
