Infrastructure Management for Organisation’s Information Technology

I

Infrastructure Management (IM) of information technology (IT) relates to management of essential operational components such as equipment, installation, data, policies, processes and human resources to increase the overall efficiency of an organisation. IT- IM, for the purpose of convenience, is divided into three categories:
– Systems management
– Network management
– Storage management

The end goal is to increase efficiency and smooth business operations. This is achieved by eliminating duplication of effort, speedy and accurate flow of information through IT and web based communication channels and ensuring smooth operations within as well as outside the organisation. Ensuring better adaptability to changing environments and adherence to standards are two other important elements of infrastructure management.

Businesses depend upon planning and infrastructure to complete projects but not much attention was paid by businesses on management of these pillars of business success. The reality is that investment in IT-IM can greatly improve an organisation’s revenues and profits. It will not be an overstatement that efficient IT-IM is the thin line that separates success from failure of a business.

The determining factors behind the importance of IT-infrastructure management are increase in the cost of downtime and rising payrolls. Efficient management of available infrastructure can greatly reduce downtime and release employees for productive work in areas where they can add more value to the business. To achieve this, technical managers in businesses are now looking for second generation applications for reducing the burden, time and cost of supporting IT infrastructures.

IT-IM has moved beyond its earlier simplistic definition, which was restricted procurement and installation of hardware and software and network services. Instead, IT managers are now asking questions like is the organisation presenting its right face through the web, email and call centres. The emphasis is more on using computer and web technologies for customer relationship management to ensure that customers are serviced 24/7.

Data, hardware, software, and processes are IT assets and infrastructure that require attention to minute detail and adherence to quality standards so as to prevent production delays, loss of revenue and security threats. Infrastructure management training has thus emerged as a part of an organisation’s training program.

Training in IT-IM ensures that IT personnel have the necessary skills to design, plan and operate IT infrastructure of the organisation. It also ensures that they have the ability to perform their tasks, implement work flow and ensure customer satisfaction. Training means that the entire IT workforce adds value to the company instead of simply overseeing IT operations.
