LA Dentists Warn on Overuse of Whitening Toothpastes

Los Angeles, CA – An LA dentist warns some consumers, regarding the over use of whitening toothpastes here, yesterday.

Prolonged usage can affect your teeth’s enamel. “Whitening toothpastes have carbamide peroxide or sodium tripolyphospate which is a whitening agent. In addition to this, they have abrasives like silica or otherwise known as calcium carbonate or dicalcium phosphate. You might think that the whitening agent does all the work; actually, it’s the bits of silica that whitens the teeth,” said by an LA dentist who wishes to be anonymous.

“The whitening agents are actually low on toothpastes. The bleaching agent doesn’t stay long enough in our mouths because of the few minutes that we only spend in brushing. The silica-like substance gives the abrasive effect on our teeth to make it whiter faster.”

But when do whitening toothpastes become dangerous? “The silica rubs off the surface stains and at the same time they remove a little bit of your tooth’s enamel. Long term use of heavily abrasive toothpastes will weaken your teeth’s enamel to a point where plaque and bacteria can attach to your teeth and damage it,” said the dentist.
