Maintain your caravan

M

If you’re new to the world of caravanning and you want to get the most out of your new leisure vehicle, you’ll need to make sure you keep it in very tip top condition, so that it’s all ready and waiting for you to hop in and speed away on a spontaneous getaway.

One of the most important aspects crucial for good caravan maintenance is booking your leisure vehicle in for a yearly service at a professional garage or dealership. As part of this routine maintenance check the mechanic will test all of the electrical and mechanical components in addition to both the gas and water systems.

Between the annual services, you will also need to take some steps in maintaining your caravan yourself.

1. Start by opening and shutting all of the windows and doors, remembering to do those on the inside of the caravan such as those to storage spaces including cupboards. Whilst doing this you also need to be on the look out for visible signs of damage, such as small cracks and pools of moisture.
2. If you have not used your caravan for some time, you always need to recharge the caravan battery before your trips away. If you find that your caravan battery is faulty, you can buy cheap caravan batteries at Advanced Battery Supplies- where you will have an extremely wide choice of sealed leisure batterys to choose from.
3. Another crucial aspect not to be overlooked is testing the tyres. When recreational vehicles are not used for long periods of time the tyres can become damaged- increasing your risk of having a blow out whilst on the road. To eliminate this very real risk as much as possible keep an eye out for visible signs of damage such as cracks and uneven bulges. If you suspect any of your tyres are showing signs of wear and tear replace them immediately, even if you think the tyres tread is not worn down yet.
4. You can easily check the electrics in the caravan by connecting them all up, and checking that all of the vehicles lights are in good working order- and if you find that this is not the case replace the bulbs in any lights which are not working.
5. Test the hand break before setting off on your journey; this is especially important if you have not used the recreational vehicle for some time. If you find that the hand break could seize, or you experience trouble taking it off all you need to do is to squeeze a drop of lubricant onto the mechanism.
6. Clean out the water system regularly, especially if you haven’t used the vehicle for an extensive period of time.
7. Finally, if you notice that your caravan is seriously damaged in any way always get your caravan seen by a professional. It’s always best to veer on the over cautious side rather than experience an accident at a later date.
