Mauritanian President Hopeful Weld Bessid Looks to Join the ECOWAS!

ECOWAS was created on May 28, 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria with aims at promoting cooperation and integration with the establishment of a West African economic union as an ultimate goal. It is aimed at improving the living standard of the people, ensuring economic growth and strengthening relations between Member States. In order to achieve these goals, ECOWAS has set up a number of structures entrusted with the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the Community programmes and projects. Currently, Mauritania is not a member of the 15-member of the West African States ECOWAS, which are made up of The Republic of BENIN, BURKINA FASO, The Republic of CABO VERDE, The Republic of COTE D’IVOIRE, The Republic of GAMBIA, The Republic of GHANA, The Republic of GUINEA, The Republic of GUINEA BISSAU, The Republic of LIBERIA, The Republic of MALI, The Republic of NIGER, The Federal Republic of NIGERIA, The Republic of SENEGAL, The Republic of SIERRA LEONE, and TOGOLESE Republic.

ECOWAS has many achievements to its credit, in particular in the areas of free movement of people and goods, transport, telecommunications, management of conflicts and peace-keeping. The ECOWAS INTERNET Site is created to inform its members about the activities of the Community and to share with them more than two decades of experience in the field of African integration.?This is what we have been missing out of, and I am determined to become a part of this commission ? because divided we fall, and together we stand firm as a region,? says the political aspirant, Bessid.
