More than 600 Support Adoption at Second Empire 5K Classic
$9,500 Raised to Benefit Hopeful Parents
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 26, 2010)—More than 600 people participated in the Second Empire 5K Classic (www.secondempireraceraleigh.com) on Sunday, May 2. Presented by Wingate by Wyndham, the 10th annual fundraising event celebrated adoption. Proceeds benefited Hopeful Parents, a nonprofit organization that provides community support to adoptive and birth families and assists prospective parents on their journey to build a family. More than $9,500 was raised to support the organization’s programs and services.

“I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all those involved in this year’s event,” said Kim Reynolds, Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern owner and founder of the 5K Classic. “The tireless efforts from sponsors, donors, volunteers, and race participants were unparalleled in making the event such a success.”

With temperatures in the 90s, participants from throughout the state took part in the Raleigh tradition. Srini Iyer, 20, from Raleigh won the men’s overall race with a time of 16:18. Tiffany Handfinger, 29, from Chapel Hill won the women’s overall race in a time of 19:10. Full race results can be found at http://results.active.com/pages/displayNonGru.jsp?rsID=92405.

The Second Empire 5K Classic included a competitive and non-competitive 5K run/walk, a one-mile recreational run/walk sponsored by A Child’s Hope and a kids’ dash. To raise awareness of the adoption process, the event also included an expo with North Carolina-based adoption agencies and supporting organizations on hand to speak with participants.
