One of the Oldest Boarding Schools in California Caters to Youngest Students

O

Anaheim, California, 14-March, 2011—-Founded in 1889 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, St. Catherine’s Academy is one of the oldest boarding schools in California, yet it is one of the few schools on the West Coast to offer a residential program for elementary age students.

St. Catherine’s boarding program serves students in 4th – 8th grade. About half of the students in the program are international students who attend the school for 2-3 years to learn English and experience life in America. Remaining students come from throughout the United States with many living close to the school in Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties. “The diversity is incredible. It’s wonderful for the boys to experience such a variety of cultures at this young age,” says Sister Johnellen Turner, OP, the school’s principal.

Families of boarding students can choose a traditional 7-day option in which students reside at the school fulltime (August – June) and a 5-day option in which students spend the school week at St. Catherine’s and return home on weekends. There is also a day program for local students. These options are designed to suit the needs of a variety of family situations.

Because St. Catherine’s caters to younger students than boarding schools in California traditionally do, its program is very unique. Students are under 24-hour supervision and follow a very structured routine. After school, students have recess or study hall. Then they go to dinner, take showers, have school-wide study hall, and go to bed. “There is very little down time, but this helps our young students to stay focused and develop strong time-management skills,” says Sister Johnellen.

But it is not all work and no play at this California boarding school. Students take advantage of the many attractions in southern California on weekly field trips. These outings include visits to theme parks, water parks, museums, and more.

St. Catherine’s Academy, founded in 1889 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, is an independent Catholic school with a military tradition for boys in kindergarten through 8th grade. The school offers both day and boarding opportunities.
