As the owner of Murf’s Appliance Repair, located in Boise, Idaho, I receive a lot of calls from home owners from throughout the Treasure Valley, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Nampa, Caldwell, regarding appliance repairs. This article will focus on one of the more prevalent questions I receive – “Should I buy a new washer machine or dryer machine or should I repair the old appliance”?
My answer to this particular appliance repair question usually depends on the answers I receive back after probing further. One of the first questions I ask is “what type of major home appliance are we talking about”? Are we talking about a washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator or microwave? If it’s an oven, are we talking about gas or electric? For this particular article, let’s just say the client asks about replacing a washer machine.
I certainly have my preferred make and model of washer machines – Top load Kenmore and Whirlpool – 2000 Design. By the way, not many people know this little fact, but Kenmore’s are Whirlpool built. Kenmore just does a really good job of branding the Whirlpool built machine.
The Whirlpool Design 2000 washer machine may not be as glamorous looking and or as “Green” as the newer front load design washer machines, but they sure are a much better built machine and last much longer. The best part about these washer machines – when they do go down, most repairs are relatively inexpensive. This of course depends upon whether you contact an honest and reputable appliance repair company to come out and fix your appliance.
At one point in time, my wife asked to upgrade our washer and dryer to a more “up-to-date” set. Yes, that’s right folks; we still own an 80 Series, Design 2000, Kenmore washer and dryer set. I emphatically declined. Why?
First, most manufacture warranties only last one year these days. Second, but more importantly, the repair cost. Most appliances these days are controlled by more than one electronic board. Should just one board go bad…yikes! To replace one of these boards, even at dealer cost, two to two hundred and fifty dollars. No Thanks!
Recommendation – find a good used Washer and Dryer set – Whirlpool or Kenmore, Design 2000 and keep a hold of it for as long as you can.
