Second Empire Grand-Prix Announces Two May Races

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 29, 2010)—The Second Empire Grand-Prix Spring Series (www.secondempireseries.com) will conclude with two May races—the Second Empire 5K Classic presented by Wingate by Wyndham on May 2 (www.secondempireraceraleigh.com) and the Inside-Out Sports Classic Half Marathon on May 16 (www.ncroadrunners.org/IOClassic). Both races are USATF-sanctioned and will raise money for local North Carolina charities.

“We are coming down to the wire for the spring series,” says Kim Reynolds, Second Empire owner and founder of the Grand-Prix. “The next two races are an exciting opportunity for the running community to experience something beyond the traditional 5K race, with a Pump ‘n Run competition and a half marathon.”

Benefiting Hopeful Parents (www.nchopefulparents.org), the Second Empire 5K Classic will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern on Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh. The event includes a competitive and non-competitive 5K run/walk, a one-mile fun run/walk sponsored by A Child’s Hope (www.achildshope.com) and a 100-yard dash for children 6 years old or younger. In addition, there will be a CU Fitness Pump ‘N Run competition. To raise community awareness of adoption, the event will include an expo with North Carolina-based adoption and supporting organizations on hand to speak with participants. The second May race is The Inside-Out Sports Classic Half Marathon. Now in its 12th year, it is considered to be one of the Triangle’s premier distance races. The 2010 Classic half marathon has again been designated the Road Runners Club of America state championship race for North Carolina. In previous years, more than 1,000 runners have participated in the event which is produced by the North Carolina Roadrunners Club with the support of Inside-Out Sports. This year, proceeds from the race will support several local causes, including the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities and The American Red Cross. About Second Empire Grand-Prix:
Born from the Second Empire 5K Classic, the Grand-Prix is the inspiration of Raleigh entrepreneurs Kim Reynolds and husband Rod Garnas along with Inside-Out Sports owner Cid Cardoso. In its eighth year, the Grand-Prix provides a fun way for competitive and non-competitive runners to give back to the community. Individual races pool a small portion of their operational funds along with Grand-Prix sponsors to cover series expenses. The combined effort has provided races with increased visibility and attendance while decreasing operational costs. This savings can directly translate to larger proceeds going to the benefiting charities. 2010 sponsors include: Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern, Inside-Out Sports, American Express, Articulon, Regency Office Products, Anna’s Pizzeria, Lifetime Fitness, RightTime Kids, MainSail of Beaufort, State Farm Insurance, Midtown Magazine, MYLAPS sports timing, Henry Wurst, Inc. Michael Law MD—Blue Water Spa and Endurance Magazine. For more information, visit www.secondempireseries.com.
