One ordinary Monday morning Buff Whiteley (Lymphatic Drainage Specialist) had a new client in her Singapore clinic talking excitedly about a new machine that had been used on her when home in Scotland. Thus began three months of communication and planning for my yearly UK trip home, culminating in an afternoon in Milborne Port at The London Road Clinic www.56londonroad.co.uk where Anne Schreiber had kindly agreed to allow me to do some observation and for Mary & Julie to come and demonstrate the potential of the Hivamat 200®. This was followed the next day by a wonderful morning with Christine Talbot and some of her clients who kindly agreed to share their experiences of treatments from Christine, a CDT therapist (Vodder) and a Hivamat 200® convert. Not only did I hear from clients how great this machine was but I also got to experiment with it on one willing Lymphoedema sufferer. I was convinced and a month later it was with great excitement that I took delivery from the DHL man, of my Hivamat 200®. The first one in Singapore! The reality of this became apparent very quickly; no one nearby to answer questions. However, Skype came to the rescue and Julie was able to answer my initial queries.

Physiopod had explained that it was used very successfully with sports injuries (athletes and physiotherapists of elite football clubs are raving about it how great it is on acute injuries) and I wanted to see if it would work on a chronic injury. My husband was the first “victim” he has a 15 yr old chronic knee injury which over the years has got progressively worse. His walking has got slower and when we “go for a walk” I felt a little like the queen with my husband always a few paces behind! I treated him daily for 8 days, after 4 days I was unable to keep up on our walks!
Since then my case load has steadily built – sinusitis, scar treatment post facial mole removal, fractured base of spine (massive bruising), post liposuction (spectacular results), plantar fasciitis (client had tried physio, cortisone, Bowen, with no success; 2 treatments with DEEP OSCILLATION® and she can walk bare foot and stand on tip-toe which she has not done for a year!). To date the case that has excited me the most is a lady with Hypo-Thyroidism. She came in the hope that I might be able to help her fluid retention. After the second treatment she rang to say she had started sweating when she was exercising for the first time, she also reported an increased sense of taste and that she was having regular bowel movements, after the third treatment she rang to say that she had stopped taking diuretics, as she is no longer retaining fluid.

Lymphoedema is most frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the treatment of cancer, most notably breast cancer. In many people, this condition does not develop until months or even years after treatment has concluded.
“I am an ex-pat living in Singapore whilst my husband completes a contract but go home regularly. After surgery and treatments I went home to touch base with my doctor in Edinburgh and she diagnosed me – I knew something was not right as I was in a considerable amount of pain in the breast and trunk area. I was sent to see a wonderful Vodder therapist in Fife whose approach was “This can all be managed”. At that particular point I just wanted rid of the pain, the Lymphoedema may have been mild but the pain wasn’t, so much so that I was constantly “guarding” especially when everyone wanted to hug me. I had no idea what to expect – what was Lymphatic Drainage and was it going to hurt!! A strange machine was brought out and the therapist put on vinyl gloves – what on earth! Then a buzzing noise and a strange but soothing sensation. It was very relaxing. I had had my first encounter with my new best friend – the Hivamat 200® – I just called it “the buzzing machine”.
I went home that day feeling in much less pain and had another session the next week. My wonderful therapist even went a step further and found out that there were a great many Vodder therapists working in Singapore. Bless her, she even printed out a list of them and their telephone numbers. My understanding was that the Hivamat® was relatively new so I wondered if any therapist in Singapore would have it.
My first appointment in Singapore with Therapist No.2 went really well. It went even better when I told her of the strange buzzing machine Therapist No. 1 had used in Scotland. She became extremely excited and asked me a few questions. Did I know what it was called? (I just called it the buzzing machine). Who and where is Therapist No. 1? What results did it produce for you? Before long she had contacted my therapist in Fife for information and was arranging to fly over for a demo from Mary and Julie of Physiopod UK Limited. Great news for me and everyone else – she bought the buzzing machine and had it delivered as soon as she could.
I made good use of that machine a few weeks later when a meatloaf fell out of my freezer onto my wrist. It was almost farcical – imagine the indignity of telling everyone how I got the massive bruise on my wrist. I almost felt like lying and saying I tripped and fell but oh no – a 2lb frozen meatloaf fell on my wrist. My wrist was incredibly sore and bruised. I phoned my therapist and she arranged to see me next day by which time my wrist had lots of bruised blood near the surface (very non-medical terms here). Plus I was extremely worried as damage to a limb if you have Lymphoedema is not good.
I had my treatment at 3.30pm that day. I’m a bit of an insomniac and got up around 3am next morning. I realized my wrist wasn’t nearly so painful and when I looked, the vast majority of the blood had completely gone – it was really amazing – within 12 hours the effect it had on me. I phoned T.No.2 next day and told her of the amazing results and she confirmed that she had had similar feedback from other clients. I had been considering buying the Personal Unit but this one incident alone convinced me that I simply had to invest in this machine.
