IRVING, Texas, July 8, 2011 – An extensive new study of weight loss surgery patients has shown that being depressed did not affect the results of their bariatric surgery. Depression is not uncommon in people suffering from chronic health conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes. The University of Michigan study found that both depressed and non-depressed weight loss surgery patients lost nearly 60 percent of their extra weight in the first year following surgery.
The University of Michigan study followed more than 25,469 patients. What they discovered is that patients who reported being depressed before bariatric surgery had equal results to those patients who were not depressed. There was also no significant change in major surgical complications between the two groups. Additionally, weight loss surgery patients experienced an average 30 percent increase in their quality of life following the procedure, citing factors such as improved mobility and independence and a higher quality of social interactions and family life. It appears that the positive effects of the surgery also had mental health benefits for the study group, as they reported a 20 percent reduction in the use of anti-depressant medication a year after surgery.
“This study suggests bariatric patients suffering from depression can experience health outcomes and quality of life improvements comparable to non-depressed patients,” according to lead study author Dr. Jonathan F. Fink, assistant professor of surgery at the University of Michigan. However, doctors and patients still need to consider psychological issues, state of mind and commitment to lifestyle changes after surgery in assessing whether bariatric surgery is appropriate and indicated for any particular patient.”
Dr. Frank’s statements are in keeping with the findings of Dallas weight loss surgery specialists Dr. Sina Matin and Dr. Julio Rivera of Surgical Weight Management Solutions. In their many years of experience, they have also found that patients who have had weight loss surgery in Dallas or Ft. Worth report experiencing an increased quality of life as well as improved health.
