San Diego, CA, July 01, 2010 — Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego has developed a new Facebook application that allows Race for the Cure® participants to instantly share their fundraising goals with friends and family, making fundraising easier and more convenient than ever.
Once installed, the application prominently displays a Fundraising Thermometer on the participant’s Facebook profile page, immediately updating all connected Friends on the participant’s fundraising progress. Registered participants for the upcoming Race for the Cure® can download the application at KomenSanDiego.org. A link can be found on the Komen Race for the Cure® page.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, realizing the potential of instant and innovative connections created by social networking sites like Facebook, created this application to make fundraising virtually effortless for fundraisers and donors alike, leaving little excuse not to contribute. The Komen San Diego fundraising application directly links Facebook with the participant’s personal fundraising page on the Komen San Diego website. Each time a new donation is received the thermometer increases, acting as a visual representation of how close each participant is to reaching their fundraising goal. The application, also periodically updates the participant’s Newsfeed, reminding friends and family to support their fundraising goals.
Last year an impressive 12,000 San Diegans participated in Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure®. However, few people realize that the entry fee only covers the participation cost of each walker, and does not contribute to the overall fundraising effort of the Race. If every participant who enters this year raises only $125 beyond the entry fee, it will bring in at least $1.3 million to support education, screening, and treatment services for breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Seventy-five percent of funds raised stay right here in San Diego County. Given that Facebook users have 130 Friends on average; this resourceful fundraising tool should certainly have a positive impact on this year’s fundraising efforts.
