Hampton Roads, VA – March 17, 2010 – TFC Recycling announced this week that volumes for the new big bin program in Chesapeake, Va. has increased three-fold since it began four months ago.
The City of Chesapeake launched its new curbside recycling efforts in November, distributing big bin carts to 65,091 residents by the last week of December 2009. Each household was added to a TFC Recycling collection route as the bins were received.
TFC collected 1,125 tons of recyclables from the Chesapeake recycle service big bin containers in February 2010. According to statistics provided to city officials by the previous recycling program company, tonnage per month in February 2009 was 308.
“It is exciting to see the overwhelming response to the convenient big bin program by the residents of Chesapeake,” said Ed Farmer, vice president of Business Development for TFC Recycling.
The 95-gallon blue containers are placed outside each participating address on a bi-weekly schedule with the lids facing towards the street for automated Chesapeake recycling collections. They must have a three-foot clearance surrounding the bin to be emptied.
“Chesapeake residents have spoken loudly that they are willing to do their part to help preserve our natural resources if they are given the proper tools to accomplish the task,” said Farmer.
More than 62% of the addresses with the new, big bin recycling carts set them out on pick-up day between December 2009 and February 2010, compared to the 34% average participation the year before.
“Chesapeake’s officials, along with the Public Works Department, need to be recognized for their commitment to making the new big bin program a tremendous success,” said Farmer. “Their belief in the program helped make it a reality. Chesapeake residents have confirmed their beliefs were justified.”
